HypeRate Desktop: The Best Free Heart Rate Overlay for Streamers & Athletes (2026)
What is HypeRate Desktop?
HypeRate Desktop is a free, cross-platform desktop application that displays your live heart rate as a floating, always-on-top overlay on your screen. Whether you're streaming on Twitch, grinding ranked matches, or pushing through a workout, your BPM stays visible — above every window, every game, every application.
The app connects to your HypeRate session via WebSocket and receives live heart rate data from your wearable. The overlay widget then floats on your desktop, fully draggable and completely customizable.
Why Heart Rate Overlays Matter for Streamers
Viewers love seeing a streamer's heart rate. It's one of the most authentic, unscripted metrics you can share — it spikes during clutch moments, dips when you're in the zone, and tells a story no camera angle can capture.
"Seeing a streamer's heart rate jump from 72 to 168 in a clutch moment is more exciting than any facecam reaction."
Heart rate overlays have become a staple for competitive gaming streamers, VR content creators, and fitness streamers. But most solutions are either tied to a specific platform, require expensive hardware, or are locked behind subscriptions. HypeRate Desktop changes that — it's completely free, works on any platform, and supports virtually every major wearable.

How to Use HypeRate Desktop (Step by Step)
Once installed, getting your heart rate on screen takes less than a minute. Here's the full flow:
-
01
Open the HypeRate app on your phone
Launch the HypeRate app on your iOS or Android device. Make sure your wearable is paired and broadcasting. Your live heart rate should be visible in the app.
-
02
Find your Session ID
In the HypeRate app, go to Settings → Session ID. It's a short alphanumeric string (e.g.
Whoakewl). Copy it. -
03
Paste your Session ID into HypeRate Desktop
Open HypeRate Desktop from your Applications / Start Menu. Paste your Session ID into the connection field and click Connect. The status indicator turns green when live data is coming in.
-
04
Click "Show Overlay"
Hit the Show Overlay button. A floating BPM widget appears on your screen — drag it to your preferred position. It stays above every other window.
-
05
Customize to your taste
Use the settings panel to pick your heart animation, color, font, background style, and layout. Changes apply live — no need to restart the overlay.
-
06
Stream, game, or train
HypeRate Desktop lives in your system tray — just minimize the settings window. Use Ctrl+Shift+H to toggle the overlay on and off at any time without interrupting your game.
Customization Options
HypeRate Desktop gives you fine-grained control over how your overlay looks. Every aspect is configurable in real time — changes reflect instantly in the floating overlay without any restart.
Heart animations
Choose from Pulse, Beat, Bounce, Shake, Glow, or none. The animation speed automatically syncs to your actual BPM — faster heart rate, faster animation.
Heart Rate Zones
Enable zones to get color-coded feedback based on your effort level. The overlay changes color automatically as you move between zones — green for easy, yellow for moderate, red for max effort. You can set custom BPM thresholds for each zone.
Background styles
Pick from Transparent (just the widget, no background), Dark Pill (rounded card with dark background), Glassmorphism (frosted glass blur effect), Solid, or a custom Gradient.
Using HypeRate Desktop with OBS & Streaming Software
Since HypeRate Desktop is a native desktop window, it integrates seamlessly with any streaming or recording software.
OBS Studio
- Display Capture — captures your entire screen including the overlay. Simplest option.
- Window Capture — capture specific apps alongside the overlay. Works well if you want the overlay in some scenes but not others.
- Game Capture — for full-screen games, switch to Borderless Windowed mode in your game settings so the overlay appears on top.
Streamlabs, XSplit, and others
The same principles apply — use Display Capture for the simplest setup, or Window/Game Capture for more control. The overlay will always appear on top of your game as long as the game runs in borderless windowed mode.
Tip: Use Ctrl+Shift+H to hide the overlay during loading screens or menus, and show it again when the action starts — without ever leaving your game.
